If something cannot escape a driver, it is the maintenance of the car, being necessary to change the engine oil and select one that is suitable for the demands of the vehicle. Although it is a recurring activity, many people have no idea what is the best oil or what to look for.
Every certain mileage is necessary to make the change of the engine oil, so that the proper functioning of the vehicle mechanics is maintained. Oil does much more than lubricate. This viscous liquid is responsible for forming a film to separate the metal parts and reduce friction and wear.
In addition, this film also serves to cushion, cool the parts that make up the engine and, last but not least, it is also an element that contributes to lower fuel consumption. Proper lubrication produces less friction and, as a consequence, there is a reduction in resistance between moving parts.
On the other hand, the lubricant is in charge of preventing the oxidation and corrosion that may occur inside the engine, keeping the surfaces clean, through the dissolution of dirt and debris deposits, sending them to the oil filter, which will be the part in charge of “purifying” the circuit’s oil, to return it filtered and with less impurities.
So, it is already known that oil is an important part of mechanics. Now we must review a little about its properties. Within its characteristics, a variant is the viscosity. In this sense, it is appropriate to keep the recommendations suggested by the car manufacturer regarding the type, but not the brand. If viscosity is abused, there will be greater mechanical resistance and this can lead to major failures.
Viscosity is the ease with which the oil is able to flow at a certain temperature. Thus, oils with lower viscosity have a watery consistency, allowing them to flow more freely at low temperatures than oils with higher viscosity.
For this reason, it could be said that thin oil works better in cold, reducing friction, while one with viscous properties is usually recommended to maintain resistance in the film, with an oil pressure that works at high loads and temperatures.
Now, to determine the degree of viscosity that should be selected for engine oil, there are several aspects to consider. The oil viscosity rating is usually from 0 to 50. The consonant W is used to simplify the word Winter, meaning winter, and the number represents the oil’s viscosity at a temperature in degrees Fahrenheit, which resembles – 17.7 ° C.
In this sense, to determine that an oil is of low viscosity, the number preceding the W must be analyzed, with the least dense being 0W and 5W. However, you can also get 10W and 20W. The higher the W increases, the higher the viscosity of motor oils and the better they will perform at high temperatures.

Thus, multigrade oils have the widest range of viscosity, which is indicated by two numerical figures. In this sense, the most popular grades are usually 5W-20, 5W-30, 10W-30, 10W-40 and 15W-40. To summarize, the first number preceding the W determines the viscosity at cold temperature. On the other hand, the second figure refers to the degree of viscosity of the oil at high temperature.
It should be considered that while the mileage of the car increases, there is usually an internal wear of the engine parts, which causes some of them to change their original properties and create a mismatch between the parts. Therefore, it is common to recommend changing the viscosity of the oil to increase the life of the engine, reduce consumption and noise.
As with fuel, additives are what make an oil of higher or lower quality. There are many oils that are composed of up to 25% by additives, these being the ones that provide the properties to the lubricant.
According to experts in mechanics, the additives improve the viscosity and its range of action, allowing the oil to be able to withstand higher loads and temperatures, as well as reducing friction to control gasoline consumption.
So if you want the best 5W30 oil, you need to look for alternatives that include additives that increase viscosity within its properties. Similarly, there are some options that include various dispersants among their compounds that reduce sludge formation. On the other hand, there are additives that reduce oil combustion.
Within the additives, there are also alternatives that control corrosion and wetting agents. Many others are designed to create an anti-wear effect, just as some have phosphorus and zinc, to guarantee greater protection, avoiding wear when metals join.
The oil must be changed periodically, because regardless of its viscosity or performance, after a time it begins to lose properties that will be reflected in the operation of the car.
Finally, it should be noted that there are three types of motor oils: synthetic, mineral and synthetic blends. Each of them is treated differently in relation to additives.
Minerals are refined from raw materials and treated with additives that improve viscosity, reduce wear and corrosion, as well as foam inhibitors for proper performance.
Synthetics are refined and artificial, giving adequate lubrication in different conditions, with superior protection against cold temperatures and reduce friction, while blends are below synthetics, but have higher performance than conventional.
